Are Dentures Comfortable?

Are Dentures ComfortableYes, dentures can be very comfortable. They are made of acrylic resins or porcelain, so they’re lightweight and fit easily into the contours of your mouth. However, there is an adjustment period with new dentures.

When you first get your dentures, you may experience facial muscle soreness, pain, and irritation. Many first-time denture-wearers also say they gag a lot in the beginning. These are all completely normal and very common.

If you just had tooth extractions and then had your dentures inserted, you may especially experience pain, because your gums are still healing. After about a month, your pain should subside, and as time passes you’ll become more and more acclimated to your dentures.

It’s also important to keep in mind, that over time you may suffer bone loss in your jaw. This will cause your dentures to feel loose, making them slide around in your mouth. If you’ve had your dentures for a long time and they no longer feel comfortable, you’ll want to talk with your dentist to have your dentures adjusted.
