Are Dental Implants Painful?

a woman worries that the dental implant surgery will be painful

The majority of patients who get dental implants report only minor pain or discomfort, but it’s impossible to say how any one individual might react.

Here’s what to expect during the dental implant procedure:

  • An IV is inserted in your arm or hand – it’s a little poke, not unlike a shot at the doctors office.
  • Depending on the scale of your reconstruction, it will either be a local anesthetic or general anesthesia. So you will either feel no pain in the area, or you will be totally asleep.
  • Immediately after your procedure, your mouth will feel numb. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication for 24 hours.
  • Pain and discomfort will be at its worst during the first 24 hours. Some people use a 24 hour pain killer prescription and some manage with over-the-counter pain medications.
  • After a few days, the soreness should go away.

Dental implant surgery can also cause stress and anxiety in a person – after all, it is invasive surgery. It’s important to remember that your dentist should take every precaution to ensure your procedure is comfortable and safe.
