What Materials are Dental Implants Made of?

a dental implant made of titanium and porcelain

Dental implants must be durable, stable, and long-lasting.The last thing you want is to have one break or fall out. This is why titanium and zirconia are the most common materials making up the implant itself. The crown is typically made of porcelain.

What Parts Do Dental Implants Have?

The dental implant has three main parts:

  • Post: this is the part that’s surgically implanted into your jaw bone. It acts as an ultra-strong “root” for your tooth. During the healing process, your jawbone and post will fuse in a process called “osseointegration.”
  • Abutment: following osseointegration, a connector piece is placed on top of the post. This is called the abutment and acts as the interface between the post and crown. Sometimes dentists place the abutment at the same time as the post during the initial surgery.
  • Crown: the crown is the artificial tooth that’s held in place by the abutment and post. When custom designing your crowns, your dentist will take an impression of your natural teeth to ensure they blend seamlessly.
